3 Must-See Historic Essex Wedding Venues
The perfect Essex wedding venues to say I do!
There are some stunning Essex wedding Venues in the county and each one offers something unique. Of course there are so many wedding venues because we all require something sort of unique to us. I mean you are unlikely to want to choose a stately country mansion, if you prefer something a little more rustic, like a converted barn wedding and vice versa.
This article will focus on wedding venues that are both grandeur in design & ones that are a little more traditional. Essex has some of the finest wedding venues & with stately homes in each pocket of the UK, we are spoilt for choice with the many offerings that we have in this Country.
I haven’t put these venues in any particular order of preference, even though as a wedding photographer in Essex I get to see pretty much everything in terms of wedding venues. Read on to find out more about these 3 historic Essex wedding venues.
Gosfield Hall Wedding Venue
I have photographed at Gosfield Hall quite a few times now and every time I am taken aback by its elegance and beauty. Situated not too far from the Essex town of Braintree, it was built in the mid-1500s by Sir John Wentworth and is a grade 1 listed building.
Get married here and you will be in fine royal company that has previously passed through the doors at Gosfield Hall. It was home to King Louis XVIII during the French revolution and our own Queen Elizabeth I was a frequent visitor. It truly is a beautiful Georgian country house to get married in!
The glorious rooms
Each room inside this beautifully maintained wedding venue is stunning and as an Essex wedding photographer, I never get bored of working here – I love it!
There are literally beautiful rooms after another here – Start the day getting ready in possibly the best bridal suite ever – it’s huge, it’s grand & it is the perfect way to get ready for your big day! Your ceremony can take place anywhere from a choice of locations – Three to be exact and they are the Grand Salon, the Queen’s gallery or if the weather is kind – The courtyard.
The reception is held in the ballroom and yep you’ve guessed it – It is another grand place to for you and your guests to be entertained!
If you are looking for an Essex wedding venue to tie the knot and of course you have the money, then get in touch with the wonderful team – Gosfield Hall website.
Layer Marney Towers wedding venue
Layer Marney towers wedding venue is another one of those fine Tudor buildings that have been meticulously maintained and was built in approx 1520 and like Gosfield is a grade I listed building. It makes my 3 must see Essex wedding venues because it has multiple features to make your wedding complete! It is situated in Layer Marney, in between Colchester and Maldon.
Let’s get personal!
Whilst it doesn’t have the multitude of options of rooms that say Gosfield does (tbh not many wedding venues do) it makes it up with beautiful grounds, period settings and the wonderful backdrop of the towers and possibly more options outside for photographs than say Gosfield.
There a few things for me that make it quite a bit more practical in my opinion. The fact that Layer Marney Towers offers you the choice of two vintage cars for your own use, to ferry you from your morning location and a big red vintage route master bus to ferry your guest to the venue – how is that for personal service, eh!?
What about service? Well on the day, all I can say is I love it! Not just the above mentioned chauffeured options above, but I have to be honest here, there has not been one wedding venue I have worked at that makes me feel like Layer Marney does. On my visits working here, I have worked with Karen and she has been class leading in her personal approach. Karen is super friendly and each time I have been here she instantly recognises me and it’s all on a first name basis. I honestly love that informal approach to something that is so personal – Your wedding!
The Timeless Rooms
Most wedding ceremonies at Layer Marney take place in the Corsellis Room which works out great for up to 120 guests. Smaller guest sizes can be accommodated in the Tukes chamber for 40 guests and The Hall of the House which can seat 18.
Wedding breakfast is normally held in the Long Gallery which serves a dual purpose for your evening entertainment too. It can be configured for most layouts and is grandeur in design.

Leez Priory Wedding Venue
When it comes to well known UK wedding venues, then Leez priory is up there & for good reason too. It has so much going on outside and in. For venues where your memories are super important, then Leez is the one.
Once again Leez is a Tudor period mansion – its nickname is “Delicious Leez” and that is very evident once you step through the gates. It has a very warm and intimate feel to it, even in the cold months of winter. It’s one of the venues that I always say there was always something I could have done. There is always unlimited photographs to take there and only the clock is the limiting factor here! Choices are pretty exhaustive in terms of where you can get hitched, eat and have fun on your wedding here.
Choices, choices, choices!
The only thing you really need to worry about at Leez Priory is where should we have the ceremony and where should we eat? Sounds easy eh? Well not exactly, but that’s a good thing really.
I’m going to give you a rundown of all the the places you can use at Leez.
- The Carriageway at the front for an outside ceremony
- The Carriageway at the back outside
- The Coach house
- The Great Tower outside
- The Great Tower inside
- The Great hall
- The Coach house
- The Great hall
- The Granary (normally where the groom party get ready)
- The Fishermans cottage (where the bride normally stays if you come the night before)
- Upstairs in the main house (Bridal preparations)
There is so much to do at Leez, that you will never really get bored on your wedding day. The best advice I can give is to get down there & take a good look around. You can get in contact with Leez Priory on their website. Honestly, you will not be let down by this venue & I should add also that Leez Priory is the sister Essex wedding venue of Gosfield Hall, so you can be sure of being treated with a 1st class service on your wedding day from start to finish!
I hope you enjoyed these 3 wonderful historic wedding venues!
